St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park is a 685-acre stretch of rolling prairie, wooded ravines, and bluffs fronting 3,800 feet of shoreline along the St. Croix River, a nationally recognized wild and scenic river route. William O’Brien State Park – Marine on St. Croix, MN
William O’Brien State Park is a 1,520-acre gem along the St. Croix River, just an hour north of the Twin Cities. Two distinct campgrounds give you options depending on the trip you’re after: the Savanna campground sits up on higher, open ground, while the Riverway campground hugs the riverbank right below the bluffs. Both offer electric hookups, so your Vistabule will feel right at home either way.
Once you’re parked and leveled, there’s plenty to keep you busy, over 13 miles of hiking trails wind through hardwood forest, savanna, and river bottomland, with the wheelchair-accessible Riverside Trail offering some of the best views of the St. Croix. Rent a canoe from the park’s concessionaire for a slow paddle down the river, or just crack open the windows, pull up a camp chair, and let the fall colors do the work. Willow River State Park – Hudson, WI
Topping our list is Willow River State Park, just a quick 35-minute drive from Minneapolis across the St. Croix. This nearly 2,900-acre park is best known for Willow Falls, a stunning cascade that drops into a 200-foot-deep gorge. Be sure to pack water shoes if you want to explore the base of the falls up close.
Beyond the waterfall, the park is home to Little Falls Lake, a sandy swimming beach, a nature center, and a class 2 trout stream for the anglers in the group. With over a dozen hiking trails ranging from easy lakeside strolls to steeper gorge overlooks, there’s a route for every kind of camper.
